Why is solid wood better?

The benefits of solid wood

Short Answer - solid wood lasts longer, is more durable, and can be refinished after wear and tear. In most situations, it is more resistant to moisture and water. Solid wood furniture is something passed down to loved ones after you're gone.

Story time - Based on its construction and type of fasteners, this cherry end table is estimated to be 75 years old.

When we received it for free from a family member the top was in rough shape. But… it was 100% solid wood construction. That means I was able to sand it down and apply a hardwax oil finish. No stain here ladies and gentlemen, just pure cherry hardwood showing through. Beautiful, right? I then tightened up some of the fasteners and it will most likely see another 75 years of use.

This after picture was taken 5 years ago. I recently looked to see what my 3 small children had done to it and it still looks great. No chipping or other visual wear that you see with the cheap furniture made today.

There are some parts of furniture that are better to be made from plywood or other engineered composites. But, we’ll get into that in a different post.
